Fostering PAWSitive Links Program and Peninsula Youth Centre (PYC).
Fostering PAWSitive Links program is aimed to further promote the emotional and mental well being of the youth residing at Peninsula Youth Centre. Youth handlers will participate in facilitated discussion groups each week aimed to increase the youth’s socialization, empathy, communication skills, and feeling identification. Discussion topics are aimed to assist youth handlers in transferring skills learned from experiences with the dogs to their own lives and relationships with other people.
The following topic areas will be covered during discussion groups: How the needs and experiences of dogs are similar and different from humans; Communication; Anger Management; Prejudicial Thinking, Racism, and Stereotypes; Self-Care; Opportunity for Change/Second Chances; Assertiveness vs. Power and Control Issues; Self-Esteem; Trust; and Respect for Self and Others. Youth handlers who require or request further processing of material learned or insight gained through participation in the program will also have the opportunity to engage in individual counseling with the Clinical Social Worker.
Citadel Therapy Canine Society, which does business as Citadel Canine Society, or Citadel Canine, is a non-profit Society incorporated in British Columbia. It was incorporated in the summer of 2012, and it is also a registered charitable organization by Canada Revenue Agency. Consequently it is able to issue tax deduction receipts for donations.
The mission of Citadel Canine Society is two-fold: it strives to make the lives of our new veterans and first responders better, and it aims to reduce occupational stress that might have resulted from their service.
To achieve this Citadel Canine arranges for the training and subsequent delivery, at no charge to recipients, of highly trained Service or Companion dogs. These dogs come from animal rescue organizations, or from donors. A network of skilled and qualified dog trainers has been established that provides basic and/or follow-on training for the Citadel Canine program at rates which are well below the normal charges to train and deliver certified service dogs.
